Postpartum Care
POST PARTUM CARE
After you've had your baby, you are most likely to be filled with joy and relief. When some of us think of postpartum, our minds automatically goes to the taboo subject, "postpartum depression".
Postpartum depression (PPD), also called postnatal depression, is a type of clinical depression which can affect women after childbirth. Symptoms may include sadness, low energy, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, reduced desire for sex, crying episodes, anxiety, and irritability. While many women experience self-limited, mild symptoms postpartum, postpartum depression should be suspected when symptoms are severe and have lasted over two weeks.
Many women recover with treatment such as a support group, counseling, or medication.
Studies report prevalence rates among women from 5% to 25%, but methodological differences among the studies make the actual prevalence rate unclear. Among men, in particular new fathers, the incidence of postpartum depression has been estimated to be between 1% and 25.5%.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postpartum_depression
Postpartum depression should not be ignored, but taken care of as early as symptoms are noticed.
Some ways to eliminate PPD are listed below, but not limited to:

Some ways to eliminate PPD are listed below, but not limited to:
- Spend time outdoors with nature. Go for a walk, stargaze (look into the night's sky and feel the change), take the time to literally "smell the roses" (go to a nearby garden or park and inhale the fragrance of flowers). Soak in the natural sun, if possible.
- Enjoy the company of good people. Invite your positive family members and friends over to lift your spirits.
- As much as I recommend baby bonding to the 10,000th power. Please do not hesitate to get some "me" time briefly, by taking advantage of some babysitting. Let some trusted individual watch your newborn for a few hours, while you pamper yourself. It may be catching up on sleep, watching a movie, or having a long uninterrupted conversation with a grown up.
- Eat a nutritious meal with fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Drink lots of purified/spring/alkaline water.
